Carnegie Hall is honored to present one of the world’s finest in this season’s International Festival of Orchestras I. Exclusively at the Isaac Stern Auditorium, the Vienna Philharmonic will play three awe-inspiring performances with GRAMMY Award-winning Italian conductor Riccardo Muti. Marvel at historic symphonies from the annals of European classical music with an opening night special on Friday, February 28th, '25.

Discover the beauty and tradition of classical Austrian, exquisitely rendered by the Vienna Philharmonic. World-class musicians selected from the Vienna State Opera congregate in this distinguished orchestra, wherein they exhibit impeccable technique and dynamics honed by years of commanding brass, woodwind, and string. The evening begins on an emotional high note inspired by the canons of Mozart and Haydn. Schubert’s “Tragic,” a symphony in four movements, recalls a bittersweet grace amid waves of high tension, intimacy, and unrest, a glowingly memorable masterpiece of thematic development. Next, the event’s follow-up piece showcases a composition that shares a storied relationship with the Vienna Philharmonic, Bruckner’s Seventh Symphony. A memorial to Wagner, the melodies cascade in contrast within and between movements, whether a rustic ambiance against intensity or climactic inversions in harmony and order.

Program
Franz Schubert's Symphony No. 4 in C Minor, D 417 ("Tragic")
Anton Bruckner's Symphony No. 7 in E Major, WAB 107

Joining the ensemble tonight is Birgit Nilsson Prize winner and long-time guest conductor Riccardo Muti, who currently presides over the Orchestra Giovanile Luigi Cherubini as music director. The maestro’s signature charisma at the podium lends the performance a youthful Italian allure and a hard-driven passion reminiscent of the legendary Toscanini. Since 1971, Muti has collaborated with the Vienna Philharmonic annually on special occasions, which include prestigious festivals and New Year’s Eve concerts.

Carnegie’s preeminent main hall, the Isaac Stern Auditorium, offers a magnificent backdrop for the visiting orchestra. Unparalleled in acoustic clarity, Midtown Manhattan’s landmark venue will allow pitch-perfect renditions of the event's music, bolstered by the grandeur of historic architecture and immaculately lit atmosphere.
